Visible AI Referral / UTM Classifier is a Google Tag Manager custom variable template for classifying identifiable AI-driven sessions when UTM or referrer signals exist. It’s intended for analytics/measurement practitioners (GTM implementers, GA4 users) who want to tag AI referrals reliably. Key features: - Checks utm_source, then referrer host, then optional custom host→label mappings. - Returns a normalized platform label (e.g., chatgpt, perplexity, claude) or, optionally, the matched host. - Configurable fallback value when no match is found. - Easy GTM import (template.tpl) and variable creation. Limitations: only classifies identifiable UTM/referrer signals; doesn’t estimate unidentifiable direct traffic, stripped referrers, native app losses, or manual copy/paste visits.
